CRAZY Drum licks by Tony Royster live for Mac Miller!

Hola baterista!!! Espero que estes muy bien. Después del último video estuve escuchando Mac Miller y encontré esta locura que hace Tony Royster sobre el final de "Dang!", un temazo. Lo transcribí, me puse a estudiarlo y acá está. Esta es la sección final, que viene de un Breakdown anterior; el fill de entrada me parece buenísimo y los licks del final son una locura. Si no llegás a la velocidad o al tempo original del tema, no te preocupes! Igual te recomiendo estudiar los fills y stickings para tocarlos en tempos mas lentos.

Estudialos uno por uno empezando bien lento y CONTANDO EN VOZ ALTA semicorcheas, corcheas y negras.

El método que yo uso para estudiar se trata de agarrar un compas o una idea, tocarla hasta que salga, y una vez que suena fluido no avanzo hasta que pueda tocarla cuatro veces sin equivocarme. Por ejemplo, tomo el primer fill de la partitura con el metrónomo en 60, cuento semicorcheas en voz alta y practico el fill hasta que lo puedo repetir 4 veces sin errores; ahora cuento corcheas en voz alta y hago lo mismo; por ultimo lo mismo pero contando negras en voz alta. Después de las 4 repeticiones sin errores contando negras subo el click a 65 y repito todo el proceso. Y así en 70, 75, 80, etc....

Contar en voz alta:

• Negras: "1 2 3 4"

• Corcheas: "un y 2 y tres y cua' y"

• Semicorcheas: para esto uso una cuenta en inglés que te permite contar diciendo las cuatro semicorcheas de cada pulso: "one e and a two e and a three e and a four e and a" (tip: copiá y pegá eso en el traductor de google para escuchar como se pronuncia).

Contar en voz alta ayuda mucho a mejorar la lectura, pero también a comprender lo que tocamos y así ser más precisos!. Por eso de las semicorcheas es que prefiero contar las corcheas y las negras también en inglés para no estar cambiando de idioma y poder concentrarme en tocar.

Hey drummer!!! Hope all is great. So, after my last video I kept watching live shows of Mac Miller and found this insane outro played by Tony Royster Jr. on "Dang!", one of my favorites. I transcribed the final section which starts with a super nice drum fill and finishes with those crazy licks. Do not worry if you are not able to play those licks at the original tempo of the song, you can still play them in slower tempos!.

Study this fills and stickings one by one, starting really slow and counting at loud sixteenths (1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a), eighths (one & two & three & four &) and quarter notes (one two three four).

The method I use to practice is like this: First I take a single bar or idea and play it until it starts to sound good, but when it does sound good I'm not done (I'm just starting), then I keep practicing until I can play at least 4 repetitions of that bar/idea with no mistakes at all. For example: I grab the very first fill of this transcription, set my metronome to 60bpm, start counting sixteenths at loud and practice the fill until I can play it through four times in a row without any errors; then I count eighth notes and do the same; and last I do the same while counting quarter notes. After those four repetitions on quarter notes I go up 5bpm on my metronome and repeat the whole process again. Then on 70bpm, 75, 80, and so on...

Counting out loud will help you to improve your reading, but also gives you a better understanding of what you are playing and that improves your precision on the drums!. That's why I recommend it so much.
